The Manhattan Bridge used to be called "Bridge No. 3" because it was the third bridge suspension bridges built across the lower East River, following the Brooklyn and Williamsburg Bridges. The Manhattan Bridge's current name was given in 1902. A group of 100 "leading citizens of Brooklyn" walked over the bridge on December 5, 1909, marking the unofficial completion of the bridge.
